Although only January, I believe that these territorial display flights are preliminary courtship flights by the male. He seems to be 'showing' a female a prospective nest site. A few minutes after these displays, a female turned up so I presume she had been watching from a distance.

A short film of one of our local Marsh Harriers. Advice from more experienced folks appreciated. Would the results have been more pleasing if I had zoomed out, to prevent all the quick panning, despite making the subject smaller?
